The Best Time to Visit Cairo from Hurghada

The Pyramids of Giza sit on an open desert plateau with almost no shade, so when you make the trip from Hurghada matters as much as how you make it. The short answer: the cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable time for a Cairo day trip from Hurghada, with December to February the coolest and easiest for walking around the Giza Plateau, the Sphinx and the museums.

Cairo has a hot desert climate: long, very hot summers and short, mild winters. In July, the hottest month, daytime highs average around 36°C (97°F) and can climb past 40°C (104°F). In January, the coolest month, highs sit around 20°C (68°F) with cooler mornings and evenings. Rain is rare in any season.

Because the by-road trip from Hurghada is roughly 450 km and 5–6 hours each way, you’ll usually leave before dawn and spend the hottest part of the day out at the pyramids — which is exactly why the cooler months are kinder.

October to April — the best time to go

This is peak season for good reason. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing, the light is beautiful for photos, and long hours out on the plateau don’t leave you wilting.

• October & November — warm, settled and still-golden. An excellent window with slightly thinner crowds than midwinter.
• December to February — the coolest, most comfortable months. Bring a layer for the pre-dawn pickup and chilly evenings, but daytime is ideal. This is also the busiest tourist season, so book ahead.
• March & April — pleasantly warm and a great time to visit, with one caveat: this is when the khamsin — hot, sand-laden desert winds — can occasionally blow dust across the plateau for a day or two.

May to September — hot, but doable

Summer is intense. From late May the desert heat builds fast, and June to August regularly deliver 35–40°C (95–104°F) days. The trip is absolutely still possible — thousands do it every summer — but you’ll want to:

• Choose the earliest pickup available so you reach Giza before the midday sun.
• Carry plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses and strong sunscreen.

What about crowds?

The Giza Plateau is busiest in the cooler months and over the winter holidays.
