Cairo Day Trip from Hurghada: By Bus vs by Plane

Both options get you to the same iconic destination — the Pyramids of Giza — in a single day from the Red Sea coast. The difference is how you spend your hours and how much you pay. Here’s an honest breakdown to help you choose.

The quick answer

• Choose the bus/coach if you want the lowest price and don’t mind a long travel day. Trips start from around $76 per person.
• Choose the plane if you’d rather pay more to save hours, arrive fresh, and spend more time at the sites. Fly-in trips start from around $265 per person.

Travel time

Cairo is roughly 450 km (about 280 miles) north of Hurghada.

• By road: around 5 to 6 hours each way along the desert highway. With sightseeing in the middle, that’s a very long day — often 16 hours or more door to door, which is why some operators run the coach overnight.
• By plane: about a one-hour domestic flight each way, plus airport transfers. You’ll typically be back in Hurghada the same evening, far less tired.

Cost

This is where the bus wins decisively. An all-inclusive by-road day trip can cost roughly a third of the fly-in price. If budget is your main concern and a long drive doesn’t put you off, the coach is excellent value — you still get hotel pickup, an Egyptologist guide, entry to Giza and lunch.

The plane costs more because it includes round-trip domestic flights, but for many travellers the time saved and the comfort are worth it — especially in summer or with children.

Comfort and the day itself

• Bus: modern coaches and minivans are air-conditioned, but 10–12 hours of total driving is tiring, and the very early pickup (often between 1am and 6am) makes for a short night. Great for hardy travellers and tight budgets.
• Plane: a short flight replaces the marathon drive, so you arrive rested and have more relaxed time at the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Best for families, older travellers, and anyone short on holiday days.

Because the plane removes so much travelling, fly-in tours generally give you more time at each site and a calmer pace. By-road tours still cover the same highlights — Giza, the Sphinx, and a museum — but the schedule is tighter to fit the driving in.
